‘Back on Board’ - that’s swishing down the slopes during the day and raising the roof and boarding at Kaprun Castle at night! Once more Kaprun Castle constitutes the historic venue for modern leisure time entertainment. ‘Back on Board’ is the ultimate event for enthusiastic snowboarders who are looking for an alternative to the pistes for testing their new moves. In the castle courtyard, skiers and snowboarders face a true challenge at the ‘Rail Battle Contest’. Extreme sports documentaries and the opening party with a live band and hot DJ beats form the adequate audio-visual background.

I have tried to visualize the up-coming weekend in a hand-drawn picture - as usual a true masterpiece!!! And for all those of you who are not really sure whether you would like to join the party, there is the podcast to do away with any doubts: http://podcast.zellamsee-kaprun.com (available in German only)

With a broad smile and slightly sore muscles I am back at work. Thanks to the weblog of Zell am See-Kaprun I can grab the opportunity to recall the last weekend and think back of my skiing holiday spent right here at my very doorstep.

The white start event on Kitzsteinhorn has definitely been a worthy kick off into the winter season! Ski-equipment manufacturers like Atomic, Fischer, Salomon, Rossignol, and Blizzard could hardly fend off all the people, including myself, who were eager to put the latest models to the test. GORE-TEX displayed and tested different types of gloves and the beautiful girls at Alpina provided you with a helmet to guarantee for the necessary safety on the pistes. And then we set out to conquer the perfect pistes of Kitzsteinhorn equipped with the latest material the market has to offer. What an amazing experience to be back in skiing shoes and feel the pressure on the lower ski and the wind in your face.

Dashing down the slopes for the fifth time in a row, I noticed a curious sensation in my quadriceps femoris. The solution: dropping in at the massage drive-in right off the piste. At the Big Apple you could treat yourself to the full relaxation programme including shiatsu and back massages. Completely relaxed and at ease I would not have minded for the massage to go on and on.

But there was even more: of course every winter opening has to include an après-ski event. The band SteveMoCelli provided for some chilled vibes at the Big Apple and the show barkeepers served fantastic drinks with glacier ice. Enjoying a glass of Caipirinha and listening to the performance of a live band: that’s what holidays feel like! But now I have to stop day-dreaming! Come on! Back to work! But there is good news: even though the week only has just started: the next event is sure to come!

22nd/23rd November 2008 Back on Snow

For us, there has never been any doubt that Zell am See-Kaprun is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Now we have found further proof of that in cold print. Formula One pilot Lewis Hamilton - the youngest championship winner ever - revealed his secret of success in an interview with the Austrian online daily newspaper oe24.at:

‘I went skiing with Nico Rosberg in Zell am See and have been so impressed by the beauty of your country.’

Obviously Pinzgau guarantees strong nerves even in stressful situations.

Hello! My name is Evelyn Thurner and since August I have been working as a marketing assistant at the Gletscherbahnen Kaprun AG. My first winter at 3.029 metres of altitude is approaching with giant strides. I am already in a fever of excitement! And the good news is that we don’t have to wait any longer for pristine snow to cover the glacier. It is already dazzling in its splendour and the pistes are already prepared. Skiing coach Stefan Moser is training the young talents from Scotland and talks highly about ’stunning conditions’. Joe Pirnbacher from the Skigymnasium Saalfelden and his charges are looking forward to venturing out onto ‘these spectacular slopes’. My tip for you: wake your skis from their summer months’ sleep and open the skiing season of this winter. By the way: on Kitzsteinhorn, newschoolers and shredders can practise stunts and jumps on brand new obstacles like the railline with a picnic table, the 8-metre-high kinked box, the 9-metre-high fun box, and a jib barrel. And there are various events coming up in November which guarantee for a great kick-off into the season. Make sure not to miss out on ‘white-start’, ‘Back on Board’, and ‘Back on Snow’. See you soon on Kitzsteinhorn!

Zelliwood in Pinzgau…

… was the expression Franz used when taking about the shooting of the ‘Bauernprinzessin’ (The Farmer Princess) in Zell am See. Now that the team of ‘Der Bergdoktor‘ has visited us once again to shoot another episode of the popular TV series here, I have to admit that his words proved to be dead on the target.

These photos were taken from my office window which gave right onto the setting. Our Ferry Porsche Congress Center became a hospital for one episode! However, unfortunately I was looking out in vain for Natalie O’Hara …

We did it! Since the beginning of October our winter homepage is online again! Once again, the region tempts visitors to go skiing or ice skating instead of hiking and swimming. It seems St Peter was so impressed that he granted us quite a bit of fresh snowfall on Kitzsteinhorn. Did you expect him to surf the Internet?! While we’re at it: I’d love to get out my ice skates some time soon and roam Lake Zell… Would that be within bounds of possibility?

… these stupid chain mails. According to them I am doomed to have miserable sex and bad luck for trillions of years. But this one is brilliant and I wanted to share it with you. I hope it will make you smile on your way into the weekend. If I have aroused your curiosity just click on one of the paper clips to watch and learn ;-). Alternatively you can click here, too. Have a nice and relaxing weekend!!

…and start into winter! On Kitzsteinhorn at an altitude of 3,000 metres, piste conditions are already absolutely perfect. Today I was lucky enough to get a first taste of the up-coming winter season. Glittering powder snow and a stunning view of the panorama while schussing down the slopes: that’s what you can expect to find right now at our 3,000-metre-high summit. What are you waiting for? Grab your skiing equipment, come to Kaprun and enjoy fun in the snow!

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Thomas. He came from Germany and in September 1981 he visited Kaprun for the very first time in his young life together with his dad and his elder brother. Back then he learned to ski on plastic skis without metal edges, which was sad. But all in all, little Thomas really enjoyed his stay. When he was 16 and not so little any more, Thomas fell in love. And of course, he and his girlfriend chose Zell am See-Kaprun to spend their first holiday together - they came by train, mind you! In the following years they visited the region regularly in summer as well as in winter. Now the time has come: after many, many holidays together, Thomas comes to our region on his own again: for his stag party and to celebrate his last night out in the wild. We would like to wish the two of them all the very best for their future and are convinced that they will live happily ever after.

The whole story can be listened to as a podcast really soon (available in German only). As your podcaster, I am always up and around to record interesting stories in Zell am See-Kaprun. Anything you would like to hear about? Mail to podcast [at] zellamsee-kaprun [dot] com

When the leaves turn golden and the days grow shorter, the time has come: during the autumn months the rutting call of the male red deer is one of the most extraordinary sounds that can be heard in our region. The dominant male deer and its rivals noisily compete for the attention of their chosen females. In the evening and night hours they fight against each other to defend their territory.

A special highlight for the visitors of Zell am See-Kaprun: to go deer-stalking accompanied by experienced hunters. The rutting calls of the deer can already be heard at Klammsee Lake in Kaprun Valley. You’ll be following the eerie calls together with a hunter who shows you how and where to watch nature’s spectacle from a save distance. After such an excursion out into the wild you’ll inevitably feel hungry. The authentic way to grasp what you have just witnessed is a chat during a decent meal. How about ordering venison at the Jaga Wirt restaurant?

Enjoy your meal!
